On the Côte du Midi, the Minervois vineyards extend from the gateway to Narbonne in the north around the Canal du Midi, and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recognised in 1985 as an appellation, the Minervois has been making wine since Roman times, receiving a major boost when the Canal du Midi was built to carry the wines to Bordeaux by barge.
A vineyard on a plain swept by the winds of the Mediterranean and marked by man with capitelles and low dry-stone walls. The most astonishing are the "châteaux pinardiers" which bear witness to the wealth of the wine producers in the last century.
