On the Côte du Midi, the Minervois vineyards extend from the gateway to Narbonne in the north around the Canal du Midi, and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recognised in 1985 as an appellation, the Minervois has been making wine since Roman times, receiving a major boost when the Canal du Midi was built to carry the wines to Bordeaux by barge. A vineyard on a plain swept by the winds of the Mediterranean and marked by man with capitelles and low dry-stone walls. The most astonishing are the "châteaux pinardiers" which bear witness to the wealth of the wine producers in the last century.

Most of the Minervois Wine Route runs along the Canal du Midi, which can also be cycled. The canal path is a peaceful, natural place.
You can even walk between the Château de Ventenac and the Château de Paraza and visit the Canal Bridge of the Répudre halfway along your journey. As well as being an architectural marvel by the famous Pierre-Paul Riquet, there is a panoramic view of the Minervois vineyards from the Canal Bridge.
